You've invested in beautiful sequin fabric â whether it's a stunning evening gown, a stage costume, party decor tablecloths, or decorative curtains. Now: how do you keep it looking as dazzling as the day it arrived?
Understanding What You're Working With
Most sequin fabric consists of three layers: (1) Base mesh/net â usually polyester or nylon tulle; (2) Thread attachment â the embroidery thread holding sequins to the base; (3) Sequins â typically PET plastic discs, 3mm to 18mm in diameter. The care challenge is protecting all three simultaneously.

Section 1: How to Wash Sequin Fabric
The Golden Rule: Always Hand Wash
This is the single most important rule for sequin fabric care: always hand wash, never machine wash. Washing machines create mechanical agitation that stresses the thread attachment points holding sequins to the mesh.
Step-by-Step Hand Washing
Step 1: Fill basin with cool water (max 30°C) and add a small amount of mild liquid detergent.
Step 2: Submerge and gently swish. Do NOT scrub, wring, or rub.
Step 3: Soak no more than 5 minutes.
Step 4: Rinse by gently pressing (never twisting). Repeat until soap-free.
Step 5: Press excess water out between two clean towels. Never squeeze or wring.
Spot Cleaning for Minor Stains
Use a cotton swab dipped in diluted mild detergent. Dab (do not rub) the stained area. Rinse the spot with a damp cloth and air dry completely.

Section 2: Drying Sequin Fabric
Never use a tumble dryer. Heat melts or warps PET sequins and distorts the mesh base. Lay flat on a clean surface, reshape while wet, and air dry at room temperature away from direct sunlight. UV exposure fades metallic finishes.
Section 3: Ironing and Steaming
Never iron sequin fabric directly. Direct contact melts sequins instantly. Safe alternatives:
- Steaming: Hold steamer at least 15-20cm from fabric surface
- Reverse ironing: Face down on thick cotton towel, low heat on the back only
- Steam bathroom: Hang in steamy bathroom 15-20 minutes

Section 4: Storing Sequin Fabric
For Fabric Yardage (Wholesale Buyers)
Roll, don't fold. Folding creates sharp creases that permanently damage the mesh and cause sequin loss. Roll around a cardboard tube, sequin side out. Store horizontally in cool, dry conditions (15-25°C, 40-60% humidity).
For Garments and Costumes
Use padded hangers with a breathable garment bag. Give garments space â sequins snag on adjacent clothes. Store away from sunlight.
For Event Decor
Roll table runners and store in cylinder containers. For curtains and large panels, roll around a wide-diameter tube (at least 10cm).
Section 5: Common Problems & Solutions
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Sequins falling off | Machine washing, rough handling | Hand wash only; fabric glue for minor repairs |
| Mesh distorted | Hanging when wet | Dampen, reshape, pin flat, dry flat |
| Sequins cloudy | UV exposure, harsh chemicals | Store away from sunlight |
| Color bleeding | Dyed thread, first wash | Wash separately; add white vinegar to rinse |
Care Card for Your Customers
If you're a wholesale buyer or boutique owner, include a care card with every order: Hand wash only in cool water. Mild detergent, no bleach. Air dry flat, away from sunlight. Steam only, no direct ironing. Roll for storage, do not fold.
