Why Sequin Fabric Requires Special Handling
Sequin fabric is glamorous but challenging to sew. Sequins can break needles and snag threads if you do not follow the right technique.
Tools You Need
- Needles: Sharp or microtex needle, size 80/12 or 90/14
- Thread: Polyester thread — more durable than cotton
- Scissors: Sharp scissors dedicated to sequin work
- Pressing cloth: Never iron sequins directly
Cutting Tips
Remove sequins from the seam allowance (1.5–2cm) before sewing. This prevents broken needles and creates cleaner seams.
Sewing Techniques
- Seam allowance: Use at least 1.5cm
- Stitch length: Use 3.5–4mm to reduce fabric perforation
- Lining: Line the garment wherever possible for a professional finish
Tips by Fabric Type
- Stretch sequin: Use ballpoint needle and narrow zigzag stitch
- Reversible sequin: Check sequin direction on all pattern pieces before cutting
- Sequin mesh: Use stay tape along necklines and shoulder seams
